A professional teeth cleaning is recommended every 3 to 6 months to maintain a healthy mouth and body. Time required for cleaning depends on the condition of the gums and the amount of tartar (calculus), plaque and stain present. Teeth cleaning includes:
- Removal of Tartar: Tartar is hardened plaque that has been mineralized by the saliva and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. It forms above and below the gum line, and can only be removed with special dental instruments. Brushing and flossing alone will not remove tartar.
- Removal of Plaque (Biofilm): Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible to yellowish film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of bacteria, food debris, and saliva. If it is not controlled then it can lead to cavities and gum disease (both gingivitis and periodontitis).
