Sealants

A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the deep grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of premolars and molars. The majority of cavities begin in these deep grooves because they are hard to clean. A sealant will protect the tooth by keeping the plaque (biofilm) and food out of the crevices, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface reducing the risk of decay. Sealants can last for many years, but need to be checked for wear and chipping.

Who Needs Sealants:

  • Children and Teenagers – As soon as the first permanent back teeth (6 year molars) appear or any susceptible teeth especially at 6 to 16 years old where the incidence of cavities are higher.
  • Adults – Tooth surfaces without decay that have deep pits and fissures.
